With our own harvest we guarantee quality thatch on your roof in Friesland and the surrounding area
The Roosma Rietdekkers brothers have been harvesting their reed for decades in the Makkumerwaard region and now also in De Mokkebank. Back then, harvesting was done with hand mowers, but now we use mechanical mowers. These are equipped with an automatic reed cutting machine, the so-called "pistenbully." We also mow in marshy areas without disturbing the subsoil.
Also active in Austria
The Netherlands can only supply about 30% of the thatching market from its own harvest. That's why we also import from abroad. For example, we travel to Austria every year to harvest at Lake Neusiedl near Vienna. The poor soil and mountain water here allow high-quality reed to grow. We also inspect this harvest. Only the best reed can be used for roofing. We also import certified reed from Eastern Europe, Turkey, and China. The reed harvest takes place between December 1st and April 1st. During this period, there are no leaves on the stems. Moreover, birds are not yet nesting, and the plants are not in bloom. This minimizes environmental damage.
